Pugh Score CRS First, Gautrat Leads Stoppage Time Surge As Red Stars Drop Challenge Cup Finale

CHICAGO (April 27th, 2021) - Mallory Pugh scored her first goal in a Red Stars uniform and Morgan Gautrat added a stoppage-time goal as Chicago fell just short in a 3-2 loss against OL Reign in their Challenge Cup finale.



KEY MOMENTS 2’ - Danny Colaprico finds the ball at her feet from a deflected Vanessa DiBernardo pass and takes a shot from outside of the box, forcing Karen Bardsley to make a save.


18’ - Casey Krueger heads a ball to Mal Pugh inside the 18-yard box, whose shot curls just above the crossbar.


38’ - Pugh receives the Krueger throw-in, turns her defender, and slots the ball into the bottom corner of the net to score her first goal for Chicago.


41’ - OL Reign’s Sofia Huerta gets in behind the Red Stars defense and scores to bring the game level.


70’ - Tziarra King finds Leah Pruitt inside the box, who scores to give Reign the lead.


80’ - Julie Ertz’s shot from the edge of the box hits the crossbar.


87’ - King cuts inside the box and scores to give Reign a two-goal lead.


90’+1 - Morgan Gautrat gets a shot off after a Red Stars corner and scores to bring Chicago within a goal to enter stoppage time.


GAME NOTES

  • In her second straight start, Mal Pugh found herself on the scoresheet for the first time as a member of the Red Stars with her goal in the 38th minute. She finished the game with 34 touches, three total shots, and would contribute in the passing game with 21 total passes for an accuracy percentage of 61.9%.

  • Vanessa DiBernardo had an influence in the Red Stars midfield on both sides of the pitch. She led the team in tackles (6) and possessions won (12) to go along with an interception defensively. Offensively, DiBernardo led the team in total duels (13), had 61 touches on the ball, registered 35 total passes, and led the team in total crosses (11) and open field crosses (6).

  • Sarah Woldmoe concludes her Challenge Cup wasting no time getting accustomed to her new teammates, having appeared in all four games of the tournament. She entered the game in the 65th minute contributed 17 touches, nine passes, three of them coming from the opposition side of the field. She added a tackle and an interception defensively.

  • Coming into the game as a second-half substitution, Morgan Gautrat spearheaded a late-game surge with her goal in the 90th minute. Gautrat had 38 touches, 33 passes with an accuracy of 66.7% and contributed an interception and clearance each.

  • Julie Ertz played her second straight full 90-minute game since returning from U.S. National Team duty, dictating the run of play from the midfield. Ertz led the team in total touches (66), passes (45), and passes in the opposing half (30). Defensively, she finished tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and also registered a clearance as well.
