Storylines
New Name, Familiar Foes: Saturday night’s contest will be the first time the Red Stars take on Gotham FC since their rebrand over the offseason. Last year the two teams split their respective matchups against each other, with Gotham (formerly known as Sky Blue FC) winning at home in the Fall Series 3-1. The Red Stars would get the upper hand earlier that year in the Challenge Cup semifinal, winning 3-2 en route to the team’s second consecutive title game.
The Return, pt. 1: For the first time since the historic 2019 NWSL Semifinal game, the Chicago Red Stars happily welcome back fans to SeakGeek Stadium. The return features new stadium assets, the official debut of The Neighborhood (formerly Harlem End), and the grand reveal of their new kit. The Red Stars also will adhere to COVID safety protocols to give fans the best and safest experience possible. For more information on protocols, please visit www.chicagoredstars.com/covid-protocol.
The Return, pt. 2: The Red Stars have another piece returning to the fray this Saturday night in addition to the home crowd, as the matchup against Gotham FC is the first game this season where Morgan Gautrat is available for selection. Gautrat, who was suspended for one game by the league for “unsportsmanlike conduct” during Chicago’s 2021 Challenge Cup finale against OL Reign, appeared in all four games of the preseason tourney with a pass completion percentage of 73% and also scoring a goal in the aforementioned OL Reign game.
Gauntlet of Games: Saturday’s matchup against Gotham FC begins a stretch for the Red Stars that will see them play three games in eight days. Following the game against Gotham, the Red Stars hit the road to play Kansas City on Wednesday, May 26th before wrapping up their pre-Memorial Day sprint in Houston against the Dash on Saturday, May 29.
