Storylines
Heating Up: As the young season advances and the weather gets hotter, so has the Red Stars’ offense. Chicago has managed a goal in all but two of the five games they have played so far this season – each goal coming from different scorers (Mal Pugh, Makenzy Doniak, Kealia Watt, Rachel Hill). The Red Stars’ will also look to continue a trend that has seen the team total double digit shots in every game since the season opener in Portland, at one point totaling 19 shots in a game (May 26th at KC).
Midfield Mayhem: The blended performances of the midfield trio of Morgan Gautrat, Sarah Woldmoe, and Vanessa DiBernardo against North Carolina on June 5th proved to be instrumental in Chicago’s victory. Combining for five interceptions, seven clearances and nine tackles on the defensive side, the triad played an important role in preventing North Carolina’s offense from taking off as the Courage managed nine shots the entire game with only one on goal.
Black is Beautiful: Throughout Saturday night’s matchup against the Washington Spirit, the Red Stars will be celebrating the holiday of Juneteenth. The game will include pre-game entertainment and an expo featuring Black-owned and Black-focused businesses and nonprofits, educational facts on the jumbotron, and more to highlight the significance of June 19th in the Chicago community. The Red Stars and Spirit will also take part in a virtual Juneteenth panel discussion this week featuring Chicago’s Sarah Gorden and Owner Josh Dixon as well as Washington’s Teagan McGrady.
