Previous Result CHI: Mal Pugh scored off of a Sarah Woldmoe assist in the second half as Chicago defeated NJ/NY Gotham FC 1-0 in the quarterfinal round Sunday, October 29.

POR: The Thorns played to a scoreless draw in their regular season finale against the North Carolina Courage Saturday, October 30.

Storylines

Previously in Portland: When the Red Stars travel to Portland to take on the Thorns on their home field, it will be the first time in six months visiting Providence Park. Chicago opened their season May 16 against Portland, falling by a score of 5-0. In their second and final regular-season matchup, The Red Stars defeated Portland 2-1 at SeatGeek Stadium September 25, behind goals from Kealia Watt (assisted by Arin Wright) and Rachel Hill (assisted by Mal Pugh).

Semifinal Showdown: For the second straight postseason, the Chicago Red Stars and the Portland Thorns will be facing off with a trip to the NWSL Championship at stake. Their previous matchup in the semifinal round was in 2019 when the Red Stars defeated Portland 1-0 October 20. This year’s matchup will also serve as only the second time in clubs’ storied histories where Chicago and Portland have played in the NWSL Playoffs.

For Club, then Country: Sunday’s matchup will pit soon-to-be teammates in the upcoming US Women’s National Team (USWNT) training camp against one another. The Thorns will be represented by five players, including Sophia Smith and first-timers Morgan Weaver and Bella Bixby. The Red Stars will be represented by Tierna Davidson, who has made 43 caps in her young USWNT career that includes a World Cup title.
