Storylines
Goals on Goals: With both teams coming off of three-goal performances, the Red Stars and Gotham will look to improve upon the goal total of their last match against each other. The Red Stars hosted Gotham FC in their home opener May 22 in a matchup where, despite several close calls from Mallory Pugh and Kealia Watt, the game would finish in a scoreless draw. That night marked the debut of the team’s Momentum Kit and was the first of three total matchups between Chicago and Gotham.
The Magic of Mal: For the second time this season, Mallory Pugh received league honors this past Wednesday when she was named the NWSL’s Budweiser Player of the Week. The former Player of the Month winner for May, Pugh was involved in all three Red Stars goals last week against OL Reign while scoring the third and final one in last Sunday’s matchup. In all six goals this regular season scored by Red Stars players, Pugh has been involved in four of them by assisting two and scoring two.
Own-ing It: Despite the Red Stars currently sitting second in the league standings after an impressive run of form, the attention has been turned to Chicago’s latest “player” Own Goal. After five of the last six goals in favor of the Red Stars were scored by the opposing team, a league record previously held by Portland (four own goals scored in favor) in 2019 was broken midway through the season. However, as coach Rory Dames said in his postgame presser against OL Reign, “Any goal scored in favor of us is a good goal, but we obviously would like to do the scoring ourselves.”
