Storylines
A Frequent Foe: The Red Stars take on Kansas City for the first of three games they will play against each other during the regular season. The two teams have already faced off in 2021 during the Challenge Cup at SeatGeek Stadium in a game that finished 1-1. Katie Johnson was the goalscorer for Chicago in the 82nd minute, just two minutes after KC’s Amy Rodriguez broke the scoreless deadlock at the time.
Back to Kansas City: Wednesday night’s matchup features a trip the Red Stars have not made since September 9th, 2017: a road game against a Kansas City-based NWSL team. Chicago and the then-named FCKC played to a scoreless draw in the last matchup between these two cities – both of which were founding members of the NWSL back in the league’s inception in 2013. Wednesday night is the only scheduled game on the road against Kansas City, as their remaining matchups against one another will be played at SeatGeek Stadium in Illinois.
Building the Attack: After opening the season on the road with only four total shots against Portland, the Red Stars look to build on the improving attacking pressure after tallying 13 total shots last Saturday against Gotham FC. Kealia Watt led the team in shots with five, followed by Mallory Pugh with three and Rachel Hill with two. Casey Krueger, Morgan Gautrat, and Katie Johnson would each add a shot respectively.
