CHI: Kealia Watt and Makenzy Doniak both scored in the second half, giving the Red Stars a 2-0 victory on the road against Kansas City.
HOU: Houston hosted a rescheduled game against Washington Spirit on their home field, falling 2-1. Rachel Daly scored the lone goal for the Dash.
Storylines
Stars in Space City: Saturday night’s game between the Red Stars and the Dash features two teams who each roster two players named to the U.S. Women’s National Team’s Summer Series squad. Jane Campbell and Kristie Mewis from Houston were both named to Vlatko Andonovski’s team next month. From the Red Stars, World Cup winners Alyssa Naeher and Tierna Davidson were also selected. Bianca St. Georges was named to Canada’s June camp, and Houston’s Rachel Daly was named to England’s as well.
Persistence Pays: For the second straight game, the Red Stars totaled double-digit shots as a team in their previous matchup against Kansas City. Coming off a 13-shot game at home vs Gotham on May 22nd, the Red Stars totaled 19 shots this past Wednesday and ultimately found the back of the net twice en route to their first win of the season. Kealia Watt scored in the 67th minute followed by Makenzy Doniak three minutes later, both assisted by Mallory Pugh.
“Four”-midable Foes: Saturday night’s matchup will be the first time Chicago and Houston will play each other in the regular season, but it will be match two of four between the Red Stars and the Dash in 2021. The two teams have already played each other in the first game of the league’s 2021 match calendar, facing off in the 2021 Challenge Cup opener on April 9th to a scoreless draw at BBVA Stadium. The Red Stars host Houston at SeatGeek Stadium in July before traveling to face the Dash in September.
