Storylines
Sweet Home Chicago: The match against Gotham FC will be the Red Stars’ second home game in a row, however the previous match was played at Soldier Field as one half of a double header with the Chicago Fire instead of at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. The Red Stars’ loss to the Wave on Saturday ended their regular season home unbeaten run at 10 games going back to August last season. Chicago had a 15-game unbeaten run at home in the regular season from June 2014 to August 2015, the only longer such streak in Red Stars’ NWSL history.
Hello Gotham, My Old Friend: Both the Chicago Red Stars and Gotham FC were founding members of the National Women’s Soccer League in 2013, and have a long history playing against each other. In the last three iterations of this matchup, including the NWSL playoffs last year, Chicago has shut out Gotham (W2 D1). The Red Stars only have one longer such streak against a single opponent in NWSL play, a run of four straight games shutting out the Reign from May 2018 to April 2019.
Righting the Ship: The Red Stars held a nine-match unbeaten streak during the first half of the NWSL regular season, which ended with a loss against Houston Saturday, July 16. Following the loss to San Diego, Chicago now faces an uphill battle with four consecutive away matches following the match against Gotham. A win against Gotham would keep the Red Stars near the top of the table and get the road trip started on a positive note before a possible playoff push in September.
