Storyline

New Faces: As this is Angel City’s inaugural season, the Red Stars have yet to meet the club on the pitch. Angel City is currently ranked seventh in the NWSL Standings, with notable wins against the San Diego Wave in July and against the Portland Thorns in April during the Challenge Cup. The Red Stars this season have not had the best of luck against the other expansion club, having lost twice to San Diego. The team hopes to have better luck against Angel City this weekend.

Back in Business: The Red Stars are bouncing back after breaking their nine-game unbeaten streak in the loss to the Houston Dash July 16. The Red Stars fell to San Diego in Alyssa Mautz’s final career game with the Red Stars July 30, but followed up with a 2-0 win over Gotham FC on August 7. The Red Stars are looking to not only start a new streak, but to also climb back to the top of the NWSL leaderboard in preparation for the playoffs.

Connecting the Dots: As proven in the match against Gotham FC, many parts of the Red Stars’ team are beginning to come together. Defender Tatumn Milazzo scored her first goal of the 2022 NWSL Regular Season off her head, followed by forward Ava Cook’s second goal of the regular season. Midfielders Danielle Colaprico and Vanessa DiBernardo created six scoring opportunities for the team, in addition to sixteen recoveries. The match was also goalie Alyssa Naeher’s fourth clean sheet of the season.

Rookie Contributions: Ava Cook scored her second goal of the season in the win over Gotham on Sunday, bringing her total goal contributions to five (three assists). Among NWSL rookies, only Diana Ordoñez has more goal contributions with seven (all goals).
