International Break Ballers

Most would think being on a “break” would entail rest. Well, not for the Chicago Red Stars. This year’s International Break has some of your favorite Red Stars at their respective nation’s training camp.

The Red Stars have three players representing the United States: Mallory Pugh and Alyssa Naeher, who both won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019, were called up to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) training camp; and Ava Cook is making her international debut playing for the U-23 USWNT.

Pugh has not only been racking up goals this year for the Red Stars, she’s been showing out with the USWNT too. High-fives all around for Mal as she has already notched 5 goals and 5 assists in 5 appearances for the USWNT. She will be heading back to her home state of Colorado with the team when they play Saturday, June 25 against Colombia.

It really is a “Naeher Nation” when Alyssa Naeher is the goalkeeper for the United States. Alyssa has 46 cleansheets in 80 appearances. She has been the starting goalie for the USWNT since 2019 and has been with the team since 2015.

Ava has been Cook-ing it up on the pitch so far this year and is among the league leaders in assists this season. From transferring to Michigan State from Grand Valley State, to being drafted in the NWSL, to now getting called up to play for the U.S., she truly has shown her grit and dedication to the game.

Heading up north over the border to Canada is where the brilliant Bianca St-Georges will be playing for her home country. The defender joined team Canada for camp and will be with the team for the match against Korea Republic in Toronto Sunday, June 26. Following that friendly match, the “Summer of St-Georges" heads to Mexico with Canada's national team for the CONCACAF W Championship taking place next month.
