Doniak scores, Chicago falls to Gotham on the road 2-1

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 25, 2021) - Makenzy Doniak scores in the second half’s stoppage time as the Chicago Red Stars battled but ultimately lost to Gotham FC 2-1 Sunday, July 25.



KEY MOMENTS


2’ - Gotham’s Ifeoma Onumonu gets an early shot on goal, but Cassie Miller makes a point-blank save.

8’ - Mallory Pugh takes a shot from inside the right side of the box, but Gotham’s DiDi Haracic gets a hand on it.


45+3’ - Allie Long floats a shot over Cassie Miller’s head to give Gotham the lead going into the half.


70’ - Gotham’s Midge Purce scores from the penalty spot to give Gotham a two-goal lead. 90+6’ - Makenzy Doniak spins off her defender and slots the ball in the net to give Chicago a late goal.


GAME NOTES

  • Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Mallory Pugh picked up right where she left off from last week’s NWSL Budweiser Player of the Week honors. Pugh finished the game with the team lead in chances created (4), touches (60), crosses (12), and passing accuracy on the opposing half (85.7%). Pugh also finished with two shots and three tackles

  • Sarah Gorden put in a shift defensively, preventing numerous Gotham FC attacks and helping to hold the opposition to just one goal in open play. Gordon would tally three clearances, two interceptions and one tackle defensively while winning possession back 13 times. She also finished with 43 touches and tied for the team lead in successful passes with 21

  • In a game where both team’s midfields were one of the many talking points, Morgan Gautrat’s performance helped live up to the pre-game hype. Defensively, Gautrat finished the game with the team lead in both tackles (6), interceptions (4), and possession gained (15). She would also leave the game with the team lead in total duels (17) and total passes (35), while contributing 54 touches
