Chicago Red Stars Tie Against Kansas City Current 2-2



CHICAGO, Ill. (June 18, 2022) - The Chicago Red Stars extend their unbeaten streak to six matches after tying the Kansas City Current 2-2. The Red Stars walk away with one point after Amanda Kowalski and Mallory Pugh scored in quick succession during the second half.

KEY MOMENTS:

6’ Alyssa Naeher shows off her great reflexes after Kansas City pushes into dangerous territory, making multiple saves against back-to-back shots from Kansas City’s Kizer

7’ Kansas City’s Hamilton quickly answers Naeher’s saves with a goal after receiving a pass in the penalty box

45’+1 Mallory Pugh goes on a run deep into the Current’s box thanks to a nice lead pass by Vanessa DiBernardo, but Pugh’s shot is ultimately deflected

51’ A cleared ball from Zoe Morse finds Pugh in the Kansas City half. Pugh dribbles the ball into the Current’s box and draws a corner kick

52’ Kowalski puts the Red Stars on the board with a header after Pugh serves in the corner kick

58’ Pugh draws a penalty kick after she receives a ball from Bianca St-Georges and gets fouled in the box. Pugh capitalizes on the opportunity and scores the second for Chicago

67’ Kansas City’s Kizer levels the score once more, making a run into the Red Star’s half and finding the back of the net

85’ Pugh finds Sarah Griffith in the Current’s 18-yard box and she is able to get a good shot on goal, but Franch pushes it over the cross bar

GAME NOTES:

  • Amanda Kowalski scores her first regular season goal in the 52nd minute after receiving the ball from Mallory Pugh in a corner kick. Kowalski’s goal continues Chicago’s trend of young Red Stars stepping up for the team.

  • The Red Stars defense once again stepped up to keep the Red Stars in the match. Both Milazzo and Morse stepped in to make big clearances, and Kowalski was able to keep pace and score for the Red Stars.

  • Despite the early goal from Kansas City, Chicago was able to out shoot the Current (11 to 8) and control possession for a longer period throughout the match (56.2% to 43.8%)
