Chicago Grinds Out Second Straight Victory, Defeating Houston 2-1

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 11, 2021) - The Chicago Red Stars weathered the rain and a second half Houston goal by forcing two own goals to defeat the Dash 2-1 on Sunday, July 11th.



KEY MOMENTS


28’ - Mallory Pugh finds Makenzy Doniak with a through pass on goal, but Houston’s defense cleared the ball out of bounds.


62’ - Houston’s Veronica Latsko gets free and finds the back of the net to give the Dash the lead.


73’ - Mallory Pugh’s free kick attempt was headed away by Houston’s Shea Groom, but the ball finds the back of the net for an own goal to tie the game.


76’ - Houston’s Katie Naughton’s clearance attempt found the back of the net to give the Red Stars the lead off of another own goal.


GAME NOTES

  • Sarah Gorden’s influence from the back helped the Red Stars dictate the tempo and consistently put pressure on Houston. Gorden finished with a team high 83 touches, and a duels won percentage of 60%. She also led the team in clearances with four, total passes with 74, and tallied an interception and tackle each.

  • Tatumn Milazzo got the start today, which marked the first official NWSL regular season start of her career. She would finish with a team leading five interceptions, as well as three clearances. Milazzo also had 63 touches and 38 total passes before being subbed off in the second half.

  • Kealia Watt put in another shift on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, forcing numerous counter attacks for the Red Stars. She finished with 25 passes, 38 touches and a 60% duels won percentage. Defensively, Watt totaled two tackles and interceptions each, and won back possession five times.

The Red Stars play their second straight game at home as they take on OL Reign next Sunday, July 18th at 5 pm CT as the team celebrates mascot Supernova’s Birthday.
