Casey Krueger Joins U.S. Women's National Team’s Olympic Roster as Full Member

Krueger Joins teammates Tierna Davidson, Alyssa Naeher and Julie Ertz

CHICAGO – After previously being named as one of four alternates to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women’s Soccer Team, Chicago Red Stars defender Casey Krueger is now a full member of the USA’s 22-player roster just as the team heads to Japan for the Olympics. This comes after an announcement by the IOC and confirmed by FIFA that participating countries now have the option of selecting 22 players for their squads but must choose a maximum of 18 players to suit up for each of the matches.

Before the change, the only way Krueger could have played in a match was if a player was removed from the previously announced 18-player roster due to an injury and she was added. Now she is eligible to be selected for the game day roster for any of the Olympic matches.

"I'm incredibly excited about the news," said Krueger. "With that said, my mindset doesn't change. I'm grateful for this opportunity and no matter what role I'm asked to play, I'll do anything and everything I can to help the team be successful."

Last weekend, Krueger played her final game with the Red Stars before heading off to join the USWNT in Connecticut for their Send-Off Series game against Mexico. Krueger had three clearances, an interception and a tackle, while tallying 22 passes and 46 touches for the game.

Krueger joins fellow Red Stars, Tierna Davidson, Alyssa Naeher and Julie Ertz, on the UWSNT roster. Red Stars Head Athletic Trainer and member of Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI), Emily Fortunato will also be joining the U.S. Women’s National Team as a part of the medical staff.

This is Krueger’s second call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team this year. In February Krueger joined the team for the 2021 SheBelieves Cup where she was a substitute in the 61st minute in the U.S.’ final match against Japan, helping the team clinch the win 3-1. Krueger has 34 appearances and 3 assists with the USWNT squad.
